For many thousands of years, it has taken a lot of sweat and muscle power to stay alive: growing and harvesting foods, building houses and roads, or manufacturing tools and machines have always involved hard, physical labor.
Our lifestyle has changed dramatically over the past century and today many of us can earn a living (and put food on the table) by just moving a few fingers. Communication and transportation technologies have made life very convenient for most of us: computers and information technology keep us informed, TV and radio entertain us, and we can easily travel long distances in cars or planes while sitting down.
Yet, convenience comes at a price. As people spend less and less of the food energy they consume, they gain weight. This, in turn, causes many health problems, like diabetes, cancer, or heart attacks. Of course, nobody wants to make life less convenient. What has to change instead is the way we eat.
One solution is a combination of mindful eating and exercise. Paying attention to the food you eat, how you eat, how much you eat and how much you exercise will greatly improve your health, happiness and well-being.
This article will focus on "eating too much" and "eating too little" and provides personal guidelines for "eating right."
